My Top 5 Favorite Vegan Cookbooks with Best Recipes for Easy, Cheap and Delicious Plant-Based Meals

Every now and then I get asked to recommend my favorite vegan cookbooks. For someone who just switched to the vegan or plant-based diet, owning a useful and dependable vegan cookbook (or five) can make or break the whole deal with this new dietary choice. Of course, I know that being vegan goes beyond just what we put on our plate (I hear ya, ethical vegans!), but since food still remains the most frequently used tool on the way to a cruelty-free world, today I’d like to focus on vegan food, and particularly cooking it with the help of useful vegan cookbooks. So for today’s post, I’ve put together a list of my top 5 favorite vegan cookbooks. In doing so, I went beyond selecting books with pretty pictures and nice fonts, but rather asked myself these questions: Do I use this cookbook a lot? Does this book call for everyday, easy-to-find ingredients? Is … Read the rest of the post

Cookbook Review: Vegan Ethiopian Extravaganza in Teff Love by Kittee Berns, Plus an Interview with the Author!

I can’t say that my vegan cookbook collection is huge: I’m usually quite picky about adding another book to my rotation because not every cookbook is set with recipes that I would be willing to make every day to justify its spot on my book shelf. One cookbook I knew right away I would be using a lot, before I even received it, is the recently published Teff Love: Adventures in Vegan Ethiopian Cooking by Kittee Berns. Today I’m happy to share with you my experience with cooking from Kittee’s wonderful new book as a part of Teff Love blog tour (you can see the lineup of all participating bloggers here) – and there’s even an interview with Kittee below in which she shares her favorite recipes and useful tips to get the most out of the book! Ethiopian cuisine, and its vegan version in particular, is like one of those … Read the rest of the post

New Series: Tried and True Recipes! Plus Our 4th of July Weekend Trip to the Mountains

You may have noticed that I haven’t been posting a lot of recipes lately. Before I pull out the “It’s hard to blog regularly while having a full-time job!” card, I’ve got to admit that lately I’ve been making a lot of recipes from various vegan cookbooks and blogs as opposed to experimenting on my own. So the other day I had an idea to put together a post about those recently tried recipes and share all that vegan deliciousness with you – after all, this post about my 10 favorite recipes from other blogs from a few months ago remains one of the most popular posts on Vegan Runner Eats. Then I had an even better idea – what if I start a new series here on the blog, and regularly share a few of the recipes I’ve recently tried? So today I’m introducing the new series that I’m calling Tried and True Recipes! … Read the rest of the post

How to Make Vegan Sausages at Home: a Recipe Review from Happy Herbivore Cookbook

Today I’m going to do something I haven’t done previously on my blog: I’m going to review someone else’s recipe, namely the recipe for Spicy Sausage from The Happy Herbivore Cookbook: Over 175 Delicious Fat-Free and Low-Fat Vegan Recipes by Lindsay S. Nixon. I’ve mentioned this cookbook a few times before for a good reason: I’m a big fan of Lindsay’s simple and tasty recipes that call for everyday ingredients, and the layout of her book is very user-friendly, from the detailed table of contents to a very convenient recipe index. This was one of the first cookbooks I bought when I switched to a vegan diet, and it saved my day many times on occasions when I didn’t have any ideas about what to make for dinner. The Happy Herbivore Cookbook is the first cookbook Lindsay published (in 2011). Since then, she released three more cookbooks that I would love to get at some … Read the rest of the post
