Our Vegan Experience in New Orleans During the Mardi Gras Weekend of 2017

When it comes to celebrating the start of spring with lots of great music, delicious food, and mingling with thousands of like-minded people till late at night, few places can compare to New Orleans during the annual Mardi Gras celebration.  A couple weeks ago Rob and I got a chance to go to New Orleans just for that reason. We’ve been to the Big Easy many times before, including a few times since Rob and I went vegan, so it was only a matter of time before I finally wrote a post about our vegan experience there. When we lived in Alabama, New Orleans was just 2.5 hours away, and my first visit there happened during Mardi Gras weekend of 2011. A lot has changed since, most notably our move to the Washington State, but whenever we get an opportunity to go back to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, we always know that … Read the rest of the post

Our Vegan Adventures in San Francisco Bay Area: Millennium Restaurant, Davey Jones Deli, Smart Alec’s, Blossom Vegan Restaurant.

So 2016 is in full swing, and I finally have a new blog post for ya! Even a few months ago, I wouldn’t have expected to start it off with travel adventures, but here we go – we recently went to visit Rob’s side of the family in San Francisco Bay area, and in less than two weeks we’ll be heading to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras. One trip down, another to go! This was my first time ever visiting San Francisco and the Bay area, and I was definitely very impressed! I’ve heard that it was a true vegan haven, but since we were with the family, eating at as many vegan places as we could wasn’t really our goal. We still found a few vegan gems though, so hopefully our experience helps you if you head that way at some point! In case you’re wondering, the boots I’m wearing … Read the rest of the post

Fremont Fair: Seattle’s Quirkiest Neighborhood Shows Us More Than We Asked For

Wow, this past weekend was definitely something to remember! On Saturday, Rob and I visited the Fremont Fair – a giant fun event celebrating the summer solstice that took place in Fremont, the quirkiest neighborhood of Seattle. This annual fair took place for the 43rd time, and while we only found out about it a few days ago, we were definitely glad that we did! Just how quirky is Fremont, you may ask? After living in the Deep South for almost eight years, I consider seeing anyone wearing clown shoes on an average day the pinnacle of quirkiness, but for the dwellers of Fremont it’s just casual Tuesday morning attire. In fact, this Seattle neighborhood has an official motto of ‘delibertas quirkas’ – the freedom to be peculiar. The Fremont Fair concentrated this free spirit the same way sugar cane juice is concentrated to turn into molasses – it may be light and thin at first, but … Read the rest of the post

Seattle Vegan Restaurants Review: Plum Bistro, Wayward Vegan Cafe, Araya’s Place, Flying Apron Bakery

On our recent trip to Seattle, I was very glad to have an opportunity to eat at a number of all-vegan restaurants that are so numerous in Seattle area. This was a nice change from our current town in Southern Alabama where we don’t have any fully vegan eateries… I mean, we still manage, of course, but generally any eating out experiences are limited to choosing the only thing on the menu that has no meat, and then asking to not put any cheese on it either… At least two positive things come out of not having lots of vegan restaurants in our area: We cook and eat at home a lot, which is almost always healthier and cheaper; Going out to eat is not a temptation anymore to stuff ourselves with junk! This alone is a great thing, right? Since I don’t want to trash-talk our otherwise lovely town any further, … Read the rest of the post

Week 3 of Marathon Training. Our Surprising Vegan Experience in Pensacola, Fla.

Today’s post is about vegan-friendly restaurant scene in Pensacola, Fla (the site of my upcoming marathon!), and my running in week 3 of marathon training. It’s Monday again! I’m amazed at how fast time goes by these days! It must be all the fun that I’m having with my blog, right? It’s hard to believe that I’m starting the fourth week of my marathon training plan as well as the fourth week of running this blog… but that’s exactly what’s happening. All right, back to the subject. So how was my running in week three? I’m glad to be getting more confident that I’m on the right path! The runs are getting more steady and more enjoyable: on my Sunday morning long run I tapped into that lovely ‘runner’s high’ state by the end and decided to go for another mile and a half on top of the originally intended distance. … Read the rest of the post
