Hi everyone! I’ve got another exciting giveaway for you starting today. Hint: the runner audience will especially appreciate this one!
As you may remember, I’ve mentioned in my previous posts that I’ve been experiencing a nagging foot pain that had been following me since before I ran my marathon in November. It took me a few months of brushing off the issue before I finally made an appointment to see a doctor. As it turned out, the pain in my heel was a classic case of plantar fasciitis – the inflammation of a thick fibrous band of connective tissue that is attached to the heel bone and supports the arch of the foot (see the picture to the right). Plantar fasciitis is quite common among runners, especially those like me who primarily land on the forefoot during running.
While my foot issue hasn’t been getting worse, it certainly hasn’t been getting better either. I cut back on running quite a bit, and there hasn’t been any racing going on either. As the doctor told me, it is quite normal for people to never fully recover from plantar fasciitis – bummer! He advised that I massage my foot with a tennis ball a few times a day, and ice it if needed. Oh well. But all was not lost!
Fast forward a few weeks, I received an email from Insoles and Beyond, a small, family-owned online business based in North Carolina, with an offer to try out one of the products they carry for plantar fasciitis. Their site lists a huge number of shoe insoles targeted to relieve all kinds of foot problems. Runners will especially appreciate their selection because most of us get injured sooner or later after taking up this sport. If an opportunity presents to help us get back into running shape quicker, we gladly take it on.
After browsing through their impressive selection of products, I went on to pick this geeky night sock by Powerstep Ultrastretch:
Here’s how the sock works: I was supposed to wear it every night, so that my inflamed plantar fascia gently stretched as my foot remained bent at 90 degrees throughout the night. This stretching was supposed to reduce the tissue from contracting, thus reducing the foot pain in the morning. Was it uncomfortable? Not at all: I slid it on right before going to bed and was able to sleep through the night with no problems.
Within a couple of nights of wearing the sock, I was able to notice a difference in how my foot felt as soon as I got out of bed. Before, it would hurt quite a bit as I made a few steps, but now the pain seemed less sharp, and the general mobility of my foot and ankle were better. I’ve been using this sock for almost three weeks now, and while I understand that the sock alone cannot cure my plantar fasciitis, I appreciate that my pain in the foot (no pun intended) isn’t as bad in when I wake up.
