The countdown to the spookiest holiday of the year has officially started! It’s always fun for me to see vegan Halloween food recipes from so many bloggers this time of the year.
We didn’t celebrate Halloween when I was growing up in Russia, but my friends and I were fascinated watching kids in American movies dressing up, going trick-or-treating, and of course feasting on all that delicious candy.
Our English teachers at school told us that to get candy while trick-or-treating, the kids in English-speaking countries had to do something for their neighbors, like read them a poem or do a little dance.
Needless to say, I was surprised to find out that wasn’t a requirement after I moved to the US. Clearly, our teachers didn’t exactly know much themselves 🙂
To this day, I find Halloween more fascinating than any other holidays.
Even though to this day I dressed properly only once (I was a fantastic Lady Gaga in 2009, having taken two months to plan out my costume in every little detail), I’m still amazed to see what other people come up with, both in costumes and in food.
For my list of vegan Halloween treats and snacks below, I searched the blogosphere to find the perfectly spooky vegan and vegetarian-friendly finger foods, both savory and sweet, that would have a striking visual appeal, and would be easy to make.

When I was young we did have to do a ‘trick’ before we got a treat at some elderly people’s houses. We recited a nursery rhyme or sang a song, or if our costume allowed we’d do a somersault. I hated it and was glad when that tradition died away.

Your teachers weren’t entirely wrong! In Scotland and Ireland, where trick or treating originated and is called ‘guising’ children do indeed perform a little song or party trick in return for their sweets.

That's so sweet, Emily! Makes more sense in my opinion than just getting candy for showing up.
