Vegan Marathon Challenge

Running shoesThe Vegan Marathon Challenge is a challenge that I came up with for myself to prove that a newly vegan runner can successfully train and complete a marathon while following a plant-powered diet. It’s been done before by numerous professional and recreational athletes, so I’m proud to be next in this lineup! #veganmarathonchallenge

Pensacola Marathon 2013: Below is a list of my posts that document every week of my vegan marathon training. This is going to be my second marathon, but it’s my first since I switched to a vegan diet. I started (loosely) following a 16-week training plan in the middle of July 2013, and my marathon is scheduled for November 10, 2013, in Pensacola, Fla. Here’s a link to the Pensacola Marathon site.

    Hi Alina,

    Thanks for a great blog! I’m a vegan myself and have been for two years now. However, I’ve never been very active. My partner is a very good runner, and last year he signed us up for the London Marathon. Unfortunately, he didn’t get in. But I did. Now I’m training for my first ever marathon whilst on a plant based diet. Your blog has given me tons of information and inspiration, which is exactly what I needed. Thank you! 🙂

    Good for you for doing this challenge. I always hear from people how vegans are unhealthy because they do not eat meat, or eggs. Silliness.

    I’ve just discovered your blog and am very excited I did! I’m a three year vegan, four year vegetarian and a runner. I’m in week two of marathon training and would like to know what type of strentgh exercises you would recommend to add into my training?

      Hi Natalie, sorry it took me a while to respond! I find that squats, lunges, push-ups and core exercises like planks work great to supplement running. If you have access to a gym, you can add some weights like dumbbells, etc. It’s best if you contact a personal trainer to learn proper technique though. Also, check out strength exercises for runners on Pinterest – I’m sure you’ll find something interesting.
