Working Out During Pregnancy: Full-Body Workouts for Each Trimester

Working out during pregnancy remains a subject of controversy: it seems like people either believe that it’s important to stay active and maintain strength during these nine months, or that pregnancy requires avoiding physical exertion as much as possible. I lean towards the first group of thinkers as I’m seeing great benefits of staying active into my third trimester: I hardly have any aches or pains, my energy levels are pretty high most days, plus it’s encouraging to see that my body is still capable of kicking some a$$ at the gym despite feeling like it’s not completely mine anymore 🙂 Today I’m sharing my typical workouts that I’ve been doing during my first, second and third trimester. I approached this pregnancy being quite strong after a year of lifting heavy (I had a few injuries during that year though, so I scaled the weights back before I learned that … Read the rest of the post

How to Beat Gym Boredom: 5 Workouts that Kick Your Butt in Under 30 Minutes

If you’ve ever committed to a gym routine only to find yourself bored and unmotivated a couple months later, I feel your pain. I myself used to be less than excited about going to the gym regularly, but kept coming back only because I knew that the gym was charging me every month regardless of the frequency of my visits. Running saved me from quitting exercise back in those days, but that’s a different story. Today I’d like to tell you about the little tweaks I’ve implemented into my workout routine that get me excited about going to the gym almost every day, plus share with you 5 workouts that bust gym boredom and keep things interesting. In the past year or so, I’ve changed my approach for gym workouts, and finally started seeing results while spending less time at the gym! These are the 3 steps that made the difference: 3 … Read the rest of the post

Fitness Update: Things I’ve Been Doing to Stay Fit Without a Gym

Another week has sneaked up on us! I realized that I haven’t written anything workout-related in a while, so today I’m going to tell you about my fitness adventures in the past (roughly) month and a half. Since we moved to Washington state from Alabama a little over a month ago, I’ve enjoyed doing all of my workouts outside. The temperatures are mostly favorable – it’s cooler and way less humid than it is right now in Alabama – plus the rainy days have been falling on the days I’ve wanted to rest anyway. I’ve been trying to exercise most weekdays, alternating days of running with days of doing bodyweight exercises right on my front porch. Of course, there’s been a few lazy days when I didn’t want to do anything, but they only proved that I feel the most energetic, productive and overall positive on days that start with some type … Read the rest of the post

Workout Central Series: Do-Anywhere Vacation Workout, No Equipment Needed

It’s time for another episode of our Workout Central series! Today I’m going to share a simple workout that I did a couple times during our vacation on Marco Island, Fla., last week. The beauty of this workout is that it really gets you going (I probably sweated a bucket!) while not requiring any specific gym equipment, so it can be done anywhere, anytime, even when you’re on vacation! This time around, I got brave enough to demonstrate the workout myself. I originally wanted to ask my husband to take the pictures by the poolside of the house we were staying in during the vacation – that would have been pretty cool, but life interfered, and we never got to do that. Instead, I’m demonstrating the moves at our local gym back home in these pictures. To see other workouts in the Workout Central series, click here. The Vacation Workout Repeat the exercises below … Read the rest of the post

Workout Central Series: Episode 1. Full-Body Dumbbell Workout by Kelli Brantley.

Today’s the day for Episode 1 of the Workout Central Series! To kick off the series, I asked my friend Kelli Brantley, a personal trainer with over 5 years of experience, to design and demonstrate a workout exclusively for Vegan Runner Eats readers. Kelli’s credentials: she graduated from the famous in Alabama Auburn University with a degree in Health Promotions. She received her personal trainer certification from Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA). The majority of her clients these days are people aged 45+, and her oldest client is an 82-year-old lady. Kelli puts together customized workouts for each of her clients depending on their needs and abilities. Kelli loves to encourage others to stay active not only through her training, but also through her own example of what a fit person can do: she regularly participates in numerous races and triathlons, including an Ironman triathlon in 2013; she is currently getting ready to compete in … Read the rest of the post

Announcement: Two New Series to Launch at Vegan Runner Eats!

Hi everyone! I’ve got an exciting announcement to make today! When I started this blog, my main concern was to provide lots of valuable information for people new to a plant-based vegan diet and interested in exercise and staying active. I tried to stick to the plan by documenting my training for a marathon and posting recipes I was developing along the way. While this plan mostly worked, I was constantly thinking of finding new ways to make this blog even more interesting. And this is how I came to an idea to start two new series on Vegan Runner Eats: – Vegan Kitchen Simplified: a series of posts about various vegan-friendly ingredients and their use, or different kitchen techniques that can make plant-based cooking even healthier. A lot of people get confused in the kitchen once they make a switch to a plant-based/vegan diet, so the posts from Vegan Kitchen Simplified … Read the rest of the post
